My Plastic Menangerie

God’s kingdom is populated by dolls. There are men and there are women, and there are strict rules on how they must be paired. Torture and sentencing await those who do not follow the rules, yet there are pink dolls among the men who prefer to be with other men. To escape the wrath of God requires both wisdom and courage, and the pink dolls must fight together if they want to achieve a life of love and peace. Winner: Amandus STUDENT: Best Animation (2017)

The best film in the Animation category has a rough, almost sketch like style that suits its simple and powerful fable perfectly. Challenging established wisdom of what animation should look like, the film is clearly the result of a singular and personal vision. The filmmaker conjures up a complete and original world and - without a word of dialogue - uses striking imagery to tell a touching allegory about the risks and beauty of being different.
